Can Your Car Breathe? Your Oxygen Sensor Posted: 03 Dec 2012 06:02 PM PST Every car has a respiration system similar to a human being. Well, maybe not similar, but there there is an intake and an exhaust. Most cars have some type of carburetor and depending on the model year, a catalytic converter as well. These items control the intake portion of the respiration process. The muffler and aptly named exhaust control the exhaust portion of respiration. These two processes communicate through the use of computerized sensors, namely the oxygen sensor. If either the intake or exhaust is clogged, the likely culprit in need of repair is the oxygen sensor. The air filter may also need changing, but that is typically performed during routine tune-ups. The oxygen sensor failure can be easily diagnosed with a portable computer and the replacement typically takes a few hours for most models. A car with a respiratory problem will have a rough idle and hesitate upon acceleration. Source: http://automechanics.wordpress.com/category/carburetor/ |
